Gemstones in Jyotisha: Planetary Allies and How They Work

July 3, 2026 · devesh.varma0@gmail.com

The use of Ratnas (gemstones) as planetary allies is one of the most distinctive and practically applied traditions within Vedic Jyotisha. Each of the nine Grahas (planets) is associated with a specific gemstone, and wearing the appropriate stone — in the correct metal, on the correct finger, on the correct day — is considered a powerful Upaya (remedial measure) that can strengthen a planet’s positive influence in the life of the wearer.

The correspondences are precise: the ruby (Manikya) for the Sun, pearl (Moti) for the Moon, red coral (Moonga) for Mars, emerald (Panna) for Mercury, yellow sapphire (Pukhraj) for Jupiter, diamond or white sapphire (Heera or Safed Pukhraj) for Venus, blue sapphire (Neelam) for Saturn, hessonite garnet (Gomed) for Rahu, and cat’s eye (Lehsunia) for Ketu.

The wearing of gemstones, however, is not a matter of choosing one’s favourite stone or the gem of one’s birth month. In Jyotisha, a gemstone is prescribed only after careful analysis of the natal chart — specifically the strength, placement, and functional nature of the planet in question for that individual’s Lagna. A planet that is inherently weak but functionally beneficial for the chart may benefit from gemstone support. Conversely, a planet that rules difficult houses (sixth, eighth, twelfth) may be better left unstimulated.

The quality of the stone matters enormously. A gemstone with inclusions, fractures, or artificial treatments is considered counterproductive in Vedic tradition. Natural, eye-clean stones of appropriate weight (ratti), set in the prescribed metal, worn from the prescribed direction, activated through appropriate mantras on the associated day — these are the conditions that allow a gemstone to function as intended.

Before wearing any planetary gemstone, a consultation with a knowledgeable Jyotishi is strongly advised. The wrong stone for one’s chart, even a beautiful and expensive one, can amplify difficult planetary energies rather than supporting wellbeing.
